Autumn is one of the best times to visit Tuscan villages: milder temperatures, warm light, grape harvest, chestnuts and less crowded paths. This itinerary favors destinations already mentioned in Borgo after Borgo and allows you to organize a day or a weekend between Val di Cornia, the hills and the Etruscan Coast.
Which villages to choose in autumn
Suvereto and Campiglia Marittima
Suvereto is ideal for medieval alleys, wine and Maremma cuisine. Combine it with Campiglia Marittima, where the Rocca and historic center offer particularly clear views after the first rains.
Sassetta, woods and spas
Sassetta combines a stone village, woods and well-being. Choose short trails, check the weather and book any thermal entrances in advance. After heavy rains, avoid muddy sections.
Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri
Between harvest and foliage, Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri offer a day among villages, cypresses and local products. For tastings, book directly with the companies and organize a driver who does not drink.
Massa Marittima and Scarlino
Massa Marittima is a good choice on changeable days thanks to the cathedral and museums. Scarlino combines Rocca Pisana, panorama and walks in the Mediterranean scrub.
Recommended two-day itinerary
First day: morning in Campiglia, lunch with local cuisine, afternoon and sunset in Suvereto. Second day: Castagneto Carducci, Bolgheri and a short detour towards Sassetta if weather and daylight hours permit.
Parking, clothing and rain
Leave the car in the areas outside the historic centers and continue on foot. Bring good-gripping shoes, a light waterproof jacket and a torch if you return after dark. In rain, choose museums, churches, spas or booked tastings; avoid walls and slippery paths.
What to eat in autumn
Look for soups, chestnuts, mushrooms, wild boar, new oil and local wines. On weekends, book and always ask for prices, duration and conditions of the tastings.
